The 2022 Hyundai Tucson and Hyundai Kona are two outstanding compact SUVs. At Crestmont Hyundai in Brunswick OH, we're proud to offer both to our customers in communities like Medina and Strongsville, OH. Each model has its unique strengths and both tap into Hyundai's credentials in advanced technology and handsome, upscale interiors. Let's see how the two stack up and let you draw your own conclusions.

Performance: Tucson gets the nod

One reason the Hyundai Tucson is one of our best-selling models is because of its efficient powertrain. The 2022 Hyundai Tucson comes with a 2.5-liter engine that's just a little larger than the Hyundai Kona with a 2.0-liter engine. The Hyundai Tucson also generates more zoom, with 187 horsepower for the Tucson vs. the Kona at 147 horsepower. If power and acceleration are top priorities, the new Hyundai Tucson comes out ahead.

Trim levels: Too close to call

The new 2022 Hyundai Kona has more feature sets to offer consumers than the Tucson but the Tucson gives you more options with six different trim levels. That includes the SE, SEL, N Line, XRT and Limited. By comparison, Kona has a total of four trims: SE, SEL, N Line and Limited. In general, the Hyundai Tucson provides a bit more variety but both give you more than enough great choices.

The Interior: It’s a photo finish

Hyundai does a great job of outfitting its SUVs with first-rate technology, and both the Kona and the Tucson benefit from that strength. Both vehicles give you the Hyundai SmartSense® Safety Pack. That includes advanced features like a lane-keeping assist that sends audio and visual alerts if you start to drift out of your lane. A smart cruise control system helps you maintain a safe distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you.

In addition, both the Hyundai Tucson and the Hyundai Kona are equipped with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ in every trim. Both vehicles come with the Hyundai Bluelink® Connected Car System so you can remotely lock or unlock your car, start it up, monitor vehicle diagnostics and more. Both models come with a 60/40 split folding and reclining rear seats, giving drivers in Berea and Akron, OH more storage and cargo efficiency.

Fuel efficiency: Kona takes you farther

Good news in a high-priced world: Both the 2022 Kona and the 2022 Tucson benefit from the latest technology in fuel economy. But the new Hyundai Kona is slightly smaller and therefore does a better job of stretching a gallon of gas. The EPA estimates that the Kona can give you 30 MPG on city streets and an amazing 35 MPG on the highway. The Tucson still does well at 26 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway.

Other strengths of the Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson has more interior room than the subcompact Kona. The Tucson also comes out far ahead when it comes to cargo space with 80.3 cubic feet vs. 45.8 cubic feet for the Kona.

Other strengths of the Kona

Because of its more compact size, the Kona will cost several thousand dollars less then the new Tucson although both are very affordable. The Kona is a good city choice because of its shorter length.

Ultimately, it all depends on your priorities

If you want an economical, highly maneuverable SUV with great gas mileage, the new Kona is the winner. If you'd like more room and more horsepower, the new Tucson will get your vote. Schedule a test drive or two and do your own comparison shopping at Crestmont Hyundai, just half an hour from Independence in Brunswick OH.
